Last Friday, Years 3 and 4 had a wonderful day of outdoor learning and bushcraft activities for their first Forest School trip of the academic year. The girls were thrilled to return to the woodlands of Norbury Park, Surrey. Our Forest School programme is coming into its fifth year and going from strength to strength. We have a created a bespoke curriculum for our pupils which fosters a sense of curiosity and collaboration in the forest.
A highlight of the day was fire making, where the girls focused on the scientific process behind it. They explored the fire triangle of heat, fuel and oxygen, and learned how a ferrocerium rod creates a spark by shaving off tiny particles of cerium that combust in the air. They then put their knowledge into practice, successfully lighting their own fires using cotton wool and natural tinder. Afterwards, the Foresters worked together to create impressive ridge line shelters, using knots, tarpaulins and forest debris to build their dens – a thoroughly successful day out!
