This summer, I returned to Nkhata Bay, Malawi, to visit Ripple Africa, the charity supported by Francis Holland in 2023. It was wonderful to see how Francis Holland’s support has helped local communities and to learn about exciting new projects being planned for the future.

During the trip, we had the opportunity to make fuel-efficient cookstoves for a local family, visit Matete 1 Pre-School, and learn more about Ripple Africa’s fruit tree projects, which help communities generate income while supporting the environment.

During our time at Matete 1 Pre-School, we learned that pupil numbers have grown to 352, placing considerable pressure on the existing facilities. To meet this increasing demand, Ripple Africa hopes to build a third pre-school, Matete 3, which will include a classroom, kitchen, storage area and toilet facilities, enabling even more children to access quality early years education.

The total construction cost is estimated at £33,148, with a further £7,000 needed to fund the school’s first year of operation, including teacher salaries, educational resources and the sweet potato breakfast programme that provides children with a nutritious start to the day.

Every contribution helps provide education, nutrition and opportunities for children and families in Malawi.
