“On Friday 16th January we went to the Natural History Museum and we participated in two workshops. In the first workshop we were uncovering fossils. We learnt about how animals fossilise with water and the help of pressure and layers of mud and rock. We got to hold a real ammonite and discuss the variations between the five different fossils. We found out that although the animals are the same, there are differences in their appearance due to natural variation. We also learnt that palaeontologists have to be very careful when uncovering fossils as they do not want to break them, and they use tools like brushes to gently brush away soil to uncover the fossils.
In our second workshop we learnt about sustainability and discussed the issues that global warming causes for the world and its inhabitants. The biome that we discussed in depth was oceans as well as the surrounding areas. We talked about what issues global warming contributes to on the coast and then we brainstormed some ideas about how to resolve the issues. In groups we were then given the opportunity to use lego to build our ideas to make oceans sustainable. We created devices such as rubbish collectors and separators in the water to stop any oil spills from destroying the coral reefs. We were then given the opportunity to present our ideas with the class, gain feedback and improve our designs.”
