Year 3 and 4 Francis Holland Foresters kicked off their first trip of the academic year with an exciting outdoor adventure to Norbury Park. Immersed in nature, the girls embraced the spirit of bushcraft as they learned how to make fire using a ferro rod and cotton wool. Guided by Mr Russell, they discovered the science behind combustion – how friction creates sparks and how different materials ignite. It was a hands-on lesson in chemistry and survival skills, sparking both curiosity and confidence.
The day continued with another essential bushcraft activity: shelter building. Armed with tarpaulin, rope, and a few basic resources, the girls worked in teams to construct sturdy shelters that could withstand the elements. This task encouraged problem-solving, collaboration, and a deeper appreciation for the natural environment. Francis Holland Forester days combine exploration, problem solving, resilience, and outdoor learning. However, they would not be complete without hot chocolate and marshmallows by the fire. A brilliant trip with all girls already excited for their next excursion to Norbury Park.
Mr Russell, Chief Forester
