With the new home of Francis Holland Prep located in the original Chelsea Library, it is fitting that the wonderful first floor library is a welcoming community space and an integral part of everyday life for pupils and teachers alike.
Mrs Dixon, Head of Francis Holland Prep, is passionate about inspiring a love of reading in her pupils, acknowledging the positive effect reading for pleasure has on all aspects of a child’s development and success, not only enhancing English language skills but attainment across all subjects, improving concentration and also developing empathetic and sensitive young people.
Miss Lucy Ivison, English specialist and author in residence at Francis Holland Prep, led an infant reading workshop for Reception parents on the importance of reading in Reception. Drawing on research from the University of Liverpool and University of Warwick amongst others, Miss Ivison highlighted the benefits of reading and how parents can support their daughter as she embarks on her reading journey, from playing word games and sing songs to reading aloud and free play. She also emphasised the importance of keeping screen time under control. Her top tips are:
- Motivate and reassure your child as they start their reading journey
- Do not set a minimum reading time per day
- Try not to associate reading with work
- Make reading aloud to your child a priority
- Read to your child and let your child read to you
- Look at other forms of printed material to bring words to life
Miss Ivison concluded by reassuring parents that their daughters’ reading journey will be a team effort with the teachers and librarians of Francis Holland fully committed to helping all the Reception pupils develop into confident and enthusiastic readers, instilling a lifelong love of learning.
